Nostalgia

I frequently reminisce about the past.  Sometimes I even long for it.  But there’s this thing we do as humans where we leave out the bad bits and just remember the best bits, which I think, is what’s so responsible for nostalgia as we know it.  I realize that some people do just the opposite where they had such traumatic events in the past that they either block it out or choose to only remember the negative bits and let it rule their lives.  Which kind of human you are, which of these two paths you take, is really up to you, and up to what kind of experiences you’ve had in your life.  Maybe it’s also up to how your brain functions.

Me, I think I’m the former type.  When I think of my childhood I think mostly positively.  Play-Doh, Playmobil, Lego, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, Jem & the Holograms, Super Mario Bros., Lite Brite, Captain N, Legend of Zelda.  It’s the same thing with summer camp.  There were days I just did not want to get up and go to summer day camp, but now I’m glad I had the structure and have the stories to tell.  Riding on small horses, arts & crafts, day camp lunches which actually weren’t that bad, swimming in the creek, hiking, huddling in the mess hall when a thunderstorm mini-tornado came roaring through.

I can’t help feeling slightly sad that I can’t ever experience those days again.  But if I could go back as I am now it wouldn’t be the same.  The world seemed like a more magical place as a child.  It seemed a lot bigger too.  I remember going back to the place where I went to kindergarten.  The room seemed so much smaller than I remembered and I felt like a giant.

What I learn from thinking about all this is that it’s important to find what’s magical and happy about your life as it is now.  Hopefully you live in a part of the world where you have enough creature comforts and opportunities to make this possible.  As much as you and I tend to complain about what’s bad or lacking in our lives at the moment, you can be sure that at some point you’ll look back on these days right here, right now, and find the best in them.
